How to choose a SUP (stand up paddleboard)

Inflatable and hard SUP

an inflatable SUP is easier to store and transport – it is compact, takes up little space, fits in a comfortable backpack and is lighter

an inflatable SUP is more resistant to impacts, suitable for fast rivers and rapids

a hard board takes up more space, is heavier, can be transported on the roof of a car

a hard board has better ride, speed and maneuverability, it is intended for a more sporty style

if you live on the shore of a body of water, a hard board will be better

Inflatable SUP board factors

How tightly can you inflate a SUP board? For comparison, the pressure in car tires is 29 psi/ 2 bar

quality SUP boards – starting from 15 psi/ 1.03 bar

At this pressure, the boards become rigid, do not twist. When the rider stands, the ends of the board do not rise above the water. The ride characteristics become similar to those of hardboards.

Premium boards – 20 psi/ 1.38 bar

Extra class boards – 27 psi/ 1.86 bar

Heavier riders need larger boards

When choosing a board for family needs, you should be guided by the heaviest rider

SUP board parameters: length, width, volume

Recreational, wave and hiking models

The simplest recreational boards have a round front. They are intended for use in various conditions, both for riding on waves and on smooth water. This is the most popular type of board suitable for beginners. The boards are longer, wider, stable and easy to ride on smooth water, as well as able to maneuver

Boards with a pointed front are easier to keep in a straight line, gain more speed and cover longer distances with less effort. They are slightly longer (11-12”)

Competition boards are narrow, long, with a pointed toe, designed for long distances, high speed. Not suitable for beginners.
